Nineteen seventy-three, the Centennial year of the Westmoreland Club is probably regarded as the most critical in its history.
The newly constructed kitchen facility encompassing the most modern equipment available, made it possible for the Club to again resume a full program of food service for the general membership as well as to restore the capacity for staging the largest dances, entertainments and catering private parties as before. here was no doubt that with the continued progressive spirit of leadership, our organization would emerge again, not only as an outstanding asset in the life of Wyoming Valley, but also one of the finest, best equipped and well managed social clubs to be found in a comparable community anywhere
in the United States. In 1997 the long-anticipated side entrance addition was completed. An elevator was installed in the newly constructed foyer to allow easy access for all members and guests to the second floor. At the same time the men’s and women’s rest-rooms were enlarged, redesigned and beautifully appointed. All fire safety and handicap accessibility codes were upgraded to meet necessary requirements.
This new addition provided an extra bonus on the second floor by adding the charming new Founder’s Room with fireplace and bar. Valet parking was also expanded to assist guests with easy access to the Club.
In that same year the first floor Main Dining Room was remodeled completing a totally renovated first floor.
By the end of 1997 the Club was well prepared for a most elegant 125th Anniversary Gala Celebration which took place in February of 1998.
In the spring of 1999 the Malt Club and the Billiard Room, formerly on the first floor were moved to the second floor, and with the Founder’s Dining Room created a space to allow for casual dining and activities for the first time in the Club’s history.
In June of 2002, the Governor’s Room underwent a transformation to become the Downtown Grille, a sophisticated casual dining room and bar created to answer the members’ requests for a larger, upscale, informal room in the Club.
In 2007, the Club’s kitchen underwent a complete renovation including a 1,000 square foot expansion complete with new equipment.
In 2013, two new spaces were added to the clubhouse The Nook Café and The Porch at the Westmoreland Club.” The Nook is a comfortable spot for members to use for meetings, informal gatherings or a quick bite on the run. The Nook space incorporates the Reading Room and Main Bar with a custom designed barista bar located in The Nook next to the Club’s grand staircase. Using state of the art equipment and privately sourced, custom roasted beans, The Nook offers premium quality coffees, cappuccinos, lattes, and espresso. Menu offerings include hot breakfast items, soups, salads, and sandwiches.
The Porch at the Westmoreland Club is a 2,200 square foot dining area that has elegant lighting, a custom designed sound system, ceiling fans, and infrared heating panels that provides members with a comfortable outdoor dining space from April through October. An enhanced rose, perennial and herb garden next to the courtyard below provides fresh cut flowers for the tables on the Porch from spring through fall.
In 2015, the Heritage Room, located on the second floor above the Main Dining Room, serves as the Club’s library and heritage museum. It also serves as a member lounge connecting The Porch and the Downtown Grille.
In 2016, the Malt Club, a cigar bar and lounge on the second floor of the Club features a mahogany bar, coffered ceilings, fireplace and adjoining private room. This handsome and welcoming area features a state of the art smoke removal system or the comfort of everyone in the Club.
In 2021, The Nook Café was converted into Bistro 59 – Cafe, Bar, Eatery. Bistro 59 is a blend between a comfortable coffee shop and an upscale bar with artisanal cocktails, a casual brunch menu, and a classy vibe you won’t find anywhere else but the Westmoreland Club.
To continue its footprint in the area, in January 2019 the Club purchased the First Baptist Church located on River Street. The building is 16,000 square feet. The Club will make use of the Church kitchen, office space while other spaces in the church will be converted to serve the club’s growing population.
February 2021, the Club purchased the former JCC property. The purchase added 120 parking spaces giving the Club the ability to accommodate all the members and guests that visit the Club. As the Westmoreland Club enters its 151st year, there exists, not only a restored physical facility and revitalized membership spirit, but also an important desire for the Club to continue to grow and prosper.
